Simple subject and simple predicate?

Simple subject and simple predicate?
Exercise 2.3: 1. The water in the tub was hot. 2. His boss gave him a raise. 3. My brilliant friend won the contest. 4. We baked a delicious chocolate cake. 5. Mother and I cleaned the house for the holidays. 6. Farmers grow corn and wheat. 7. The faculty planned a school picnic. 8. Philadelphia is in Pennsylvania. 9. Frisky squirrels climb trees. 10. He writes plays. 11. Fish swim. Exercise 2.4 Directions: Go back to Exercise 2.3 and identify the simple subject and simple predicate of each sentence. I'm not really good with simple subject and predicate. Finding the subject and predicate is no problem, but this exercise is a bit confusing. It's supposed to be the noun and verb of each group, right? I don't really understand it. Some help, please?

Just the noun and just the verb, not the whole phrase i.e. 1. water was 2. boss gave 3. friend won

Yes. The subject is the noun, and the predicate is the verb.
